Last Wednesday’s crash at the Montana City roundabout after a high-speed chase past the Montana City School was not the first brush with law enforcement for Christopher Gransberg. Not only was Gransberg on probation for an offense in Richland County, but he was also awaiting sentencing for felony theft in Jefferson County.
Gransberg, 26, and his wife, Lacy Camay Gransberg, had both admitted a January 14 theft from the home of her uncle in Montana City. The event came only two weeks after Gransberg entered a guilty plea to felony theft in the district court in Boulder.
According to law enforcement, Wednesday’s chase began on Highway 12 when an officer attempted a traffic stop for driving with a revoked license. Gransberg sped up and turned south on Highway 518, at times reaching speeds near 100 miles per hour, officers said.
His route took him past the Ash Grove Cement plant and the Mon- tana City School at recess time. Followed by law enforcement, he crashed into a utility pole near the Montana City Store. He and his wife were both transported by ambulance to the hospital for care of non-life-threatening injuries.
Law enforcement officials brought in a K-9 unit to search the vehicle for drugs after the crash. In January, according to court records, the pair took firearms, a floor jack, a chainsaw, and photographic equipment from the Montana City home of her uncle.
Lacy Gransberg was sentenced in Jefferson County district court September 6 to four years for her part in that crime. Imposition of that sentence was deferred on conditions, including a requirement to remain law-abiding, and her probation was made concurrent with a probation out of Richland County. She was also fined $1000.
Christopher Gransberg was on probation awaiting sentencing for the January offense. A pre-sentence investigation had been ordered into his background. One of the conditions of his probation said, “The offender must comply with all municipal, county, state and federal laws and ordinances and shall conduct himself as a good citizen.” As of press time, no date had been set for Gransberg to appear in Jefferson County for sentencing.
