Dollar General is building a Montana City store expected to open by June, bringing America’s leading retailer – and its youth literacy programs – to Jefferson County.

“DG is currently under construction on a new location at 7 Old Montana Highway,” Dollar General Public Relations Specialist Emma Hall said in an email. “At this time, a store opening is slated for spring 2026, but understand that construction progress may alter this date.”

The 8500-square-foot store represents the first Dollar General in Jefferson County and in the greater Helena area. DG expects the new outlet to hire up to 10 employees, with interested individuals advised to visit dollargeneral.com/careers for details and applications.

Dollar General is the country’s top dollar-store retailer and the leader in U.S. retail in terms of locations, with more than 20,000 outlets nationwide. Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, which are owned by the same company, have around 16,000 stores, while 7-Eleven has nearly 10,000. Walmart, in comparison, has fewer than 6,000.

The new Montana City outlet brings with it the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards grants to qualifying educational institutions within 15 miles of the company’s stores.

Starting next year, schools, nonprofits, and libraries in Montana City, Clancy, Jefferson City, Helena, East Helena and beyond will be able to apply for the foundation’s summer reading and youth literacy programs, for example, which support the development of pre-K through 12th-grade students with a focus on below grade-level readers.

Since 1993, DGLF has awarded more than $275 million in grants and helped nearly 24 million individuals. Learn more at www.dgliteracy.com.
