The Jefferson County Museum is now advertising for a part-time Museum Director/Curator, leaving locals wondering, “What about Melody Pesta?”
Pesta started working at the Jefferson County Museum in March of 2017. Nearly six years later, she’s chosen to dance to a new tune, and that song is calling her across the country.
After meeting a man while dancing, she received an invitation to snowbird with him, traveling the country in his RV. “I don’t want to miss this opportunity to travel across the southern states from California to Florida,” Pesta told The Monitor. “I am 68, so I should be retired and enjoying myself.”
Museum Substitute Raemarie Bruce said she will not be applying for the position, but will instead continue in her current role by helping curate new exhibits and assisting residents with their research.
“I simply do not think I would be able to give the museum the time and attention it deserves on top of my studies,” Bruce said, adding that she will begin online graduate school from San José State University to obtain a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences come the new year.
Although Bruce is thankful for the time she spent working alongside Pesta, she expressed excitement in this new chapter of history.
“Melody has been an absolute joy to work with,” Bruce said. “I am happy that she can now pursue things that bring her joy: dancing and avoiding cold Montana winters.”
When Pesta first took on the museum director position at the Jefferson County Museum, she had no idea what operating the organization would involve. Over the last six years, she’s learned that it’s a lot.
“I have really enjoyed my experience at the museum. I learned fascinating historical information about Jefferson County every time I stepped foot into the building,” Pesta said. “I will miss not being there, but I can’t resist a new adventure.”
Those interested in applying for the museum director position must mail their application, a letter of interest and resume to Kellie Doherty at the Jefferson County Human Resource Office by Dec. 16 at 5 p.m.
