Aiming to clarify how Jefferson County makes road maintenance decisions, especially in terms of winter weather problems, the county has released a statement titled “Ice, Snow & the Jefferson County Road Crew.” The full statement appears in the opinion section of this issue. “We attempt every day to respond quickly and cordially to problem areas and, overall, to provide for a safe transportation network in the county.
But our crews cannot be everywhere all the time,” says the statement. It goes on to suggest actions which county residents can take to alleviate issues. It also explains the order of priorities, situations that can interfere with routine maintenance, the cost of services and more. Although the statement does not mention it, roads within the city limits of Boulder and Whitehall are not the responsibility of the county and property owners within those borders do not pay county road taxes.
Instead they pay city road taxes. As mentioned in the statement, many of the subdivision roads in the county are not the responsibility of the county, either. Those roads are to be maintained by area homeowners. In some cases, that service is arranged through the subdivision’s homeowner’s association. For the full statement, and for contact information on additional questions, see the opinion section.
