Clancy resident Joshua Plafcan, a Montana National Guard sergeant and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant, ranked among the top performers in a recent four-day test of soldiers’ advanced rifle and pistol marksmanship.

At the 4th annual MT National Guard Adjutant General (TAG) Match, Sgt. Plafcan of I Company, 145th Brigade Support Battalion, placed in the “Governor’s Twenty,” the top 20% of competitors in terms of marksmanship and consistent performance across multiple events.

“I did OK, hopefully I’ll do better in the future,” said Plafcan, who grew up hunting on an Arkansas farm and moved to Clancy about five years ago. “I know I can shoot better.”

The 37-year-old former U.S. Marine has been with the Montana National Guard since 2017 and the Sheriff’s Office since 2021, where he serves as one of the firearms instructors. This marked his first time participating in the TAG Match.

“Just getting to go and shoot with people I’ve known for years and meet some people I’ve never worked with, it’s fun,” he said.

Sheriff Tom Grimsrud had nothing but praise for the lieutenant.

“He’s very humble,” said Grimsrud. “He holds himself to a higher standard than almost anybody around him. He sets the standard here.”
