The problem with Marias Valley Golf and Country Club, a challenging, tree-lined public course on a remote stretch of riverbank outside Shelby, is that there is no cell service.

Which means there’s no real-time scoring. Which meant that, at the end of the second and final round of the Class B boys’ state championship golf meet on May 15, Jefferson High Coach Anna DeMars didn’t know where her team stood.

The Panthers had started the day in the lead, three shots ahead of rival Columbus, and had done even better in their second circuit, shooting an aggregate 316. But DeMars sensed that Columbus had done well, too.
