A wild backroads chase from Boulder to Basin reportedly led to vehicular ramming, fisticuffs, headbutting, shovel-wielding and an aimed pistol before police were called, resulting in two Main Street business owners and their associates facing felony charges.
Maddog Pizza’s Bruce Giulio, local musician Johnny Holland and Boulder resident Neil Meier have been charged with felony assault with a weapon, while Dave Schell of Dave’s 32 oz. faces felony criminal endangerment, with an arraignment set for Nov. 5.
Early on Oct. 19, Jefferson County dispatch received a 911 call from Morgan Taylor and his friends Carson Butts, Luke Carisch, and Austin Eaton, who had been riding their two side-by-sides along Cataract Creek.
One of their vehicles had broken down and was being towed by the other when they overtook a slow-moving CanAm side-by-side driven by Schell. “The male individual they passed apparently became very upset and began to yell and flip them off,” reads the police chargesheet.
When Taylor and his friends refueled at Boulder’s Town Pump, they again came across the CanAm. “Schell chased them and used his CanAm to ram into the side-by-side being towed,” says the report. On the second ramming, “Schell rammed them so hard he ‘spun- out,’ struck the side of a hill and crashed.”
Taylor and his friends pulled over on Uncle Sam Gulch Road to assess the damage. Schell soon showed up in a white Chevy truck with “Maddog Pizza” on the side, driven by Giulio, along with Holland and Meier in a white Dodge truck.
The two trucks chased the side-by-sides until Giulio rammed the Chevy into one of them. Finally, “everyone stopped and got out and a fight ensued,” says the report. “Schell head-butted Eaton while Holland pointed a gun at Eaton and others and threatened to shoot. Meier began a fist-fight with Carisch and then struck him with a shovel. Giulio punched Butts. Schell and Carisch then got into a fist-fight where they ended up rolling down a large hill.”
Taylor, Butts, and Eaton reported injuries and being frightened. Police said Carisch had obvious injuries to his face and neck area. Giulio, Schell, Meier, and Holland denied anyone had a gun.
Schell said he “felt threatened” after the kids passed him and called Giulio for help, according to the chargesheet. Meier said he was at the bar when Holland informed him that they had to “deal with some kids” causing problems for Schell. Giulio acknowledged they had “an encounter” with some kids and “just scared them.”
All four were arrested and taken to Boulder detention and later released after posting bond. Giulio and Schell declined to comment to The Monitor on the charges.
