“My heart is full as I consider what we in Boulder get done together,” Carolyn Lewis said as she led the dedication ceremony for the Carol LeRoux hiking and biking trail on Saturday, May 13.

The trail, the result of seven years of planning and work, is a path from the city limits of Boulder to the Jefferson County Recreation Park. The path was dedicated to Carol LeRoux, a Boulder woman who enjoyed hiking and biking and was part of BART- COM (Boulder Area Recreation Trails Committee) when the committee took on the trail project. After the dedication south of the Boulder River bridge, people went to the Jefferson County Recreation Park by bike and car to celebrate another opening, the opening of the Jefferson County Bike Barn.

A joint project of BART-COM and the Jefferson County Fair Board, the Bike Barn is a facility for bikers traveling through the area and camping at the fairgrounds to cook, eat, and get shelter from the weather. Lewis thanked a long list of local volunteers who built the facility, using funds provided by the Elkhorn Community Foundation, Northwestern Energy, Jefferson County and local fundraisers to purchase building supplies. Lewis singled out Joe Chance, Steve Olson and Marilyn McCauley for their good work. She also praised the Montana Department of Transportation for putting in an eight-foot shoulder on Highway 69 for biking and walking from the fairgrounds to the Elkhorn turnoff.

“Carol LeRoux was a real doer,” said Lewis, as she talked about the volunteer work to build the bike barn. “I really feel that Carol is here with us today.”
