Former Basin Volunteer Fire Chief Richard Rhodes doesn’t ask for accolades. He doesn’t expect anything in return for his work, which consists of whatever emergency comes his community’s way.
“I’m not the type that likes to be recognized for anything,” Rhodes said. “I just do my job. That’s all it is.”
Recently, however, Rhodes has been getting his fair share of attention, as he was recently featured in the Helena Independent Record’s “First Responders Appreciation” insert. People have been stopping Rhodes at the Silver Saddle and congratulating him, and he’s happy to say “thank you.” He’s glad to see people understand he’s there for them.
Although it’s the adrenaline rush that got Rhodes into being a first responder, what matters most to him is being there for his neighbors.
“I just like to help the community out,” he said. “I think everyone should try it.”
According to Basin Volunteer Fire Clerk Sarina Eckman, Rhodes goes above and beyond the call of duty, and always has.
“Not only does he respond to the majority of the calls for service, he is always on hand to help the department with repairs and improvements,” she said. “He has worked hard to recruit and train new members and has kept his own practices up to date. In a community with limited resources and a small department, a person like Richard is an invaluable asset.”
