Dozens of young cowboys and cowgirls came out to compete at Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday for Montana’s annual Kid’s Rodeo, an event marred by a significant injury to a fan.

Welcoming 80 contestants from across the state, the Jefferson County Rodeo Association (JCRA) hosted the event for the second consecutive year and third time in five years, according to Brady Nordahl, JCRA president and the event organizer.

Just before the competition began, a horse knocked over and stomped on a contestant’s mother. The rodeo was delayed as an ambulance came to take her away. The woman had a crushed eye socket and a brain hemorrhage, but Nordahl said she’s doing OK at a local hospital.
