The Animal Shelter and Care of Jefferson County hosted its third annual Walk and Wag fundraising event on Saturday, June 24.

This year, even with a high chance of stormy weather and gray skies, both vendors and community members — 25 to be exact — showed up to support the project as well as to get out with their furry friends. Attendees participated in three separate walks: a 1-mile, a 5K and a 10K. The walkers were pleased to get out with their pets and they were happy that the weather held so that they could complete the walk.

In addition to the walk there were several vendors, including Paws and Go – a business out of Helena run by Mackenna Boske. Boske provides house call nail trims for pets and she was very glad to be able to work with the shelter and come down to Boulder for the event.

Racheal Vargas from Montana K9 Safety was also in attendance with a small demonstration of K9 CPR, first aid and emergency care.

Vargas also provided information on a workshop that Montana K9 Safety will host in September in Boulder. The workshop will cover basic first aid, CPR training and trap removal.

The Barking Mad Bakery truck also joined in the fun, serving up all natural specialty dog treats, which many pups appeared quite fond of.

Darlene Moyer, the organizer for the event, said that the shelter was very appreciative for all the help that they have received getting the shelter up and running. Over the last year the Animal Shelter has started on its new building, fences and kennels.

A1 Rentals donated the equipment used to construct the run, and youth volunteers from AYA erected the fence.

The Animal Shelter is still working on finishing the building with electrical, water and sewer lines as well as finishing the parking area and the outdoor area for the animals. Be sure to keep an eye out on the group’s Facebook page to keep up with the upcoming events for pets and owners alike.

The event is one of three major fundraisers that the group puts on, including Love of Paws in the Spring, the Walk and Wag in the summer and Cats Chill and Cowboys in the fall. The Animal Shelter also hosts community dog training nights throughout the year.
