The 2nd Annual Walk-And-Wag fund raising event in Boulder on Saturday attracted many interested visitors – and their human friends.
Cheryl Haasaker from Animal Shelter & Care of Jefferson County was one of the organizers of the event, which featured local musicians, food trucks and several vendors. Haassakker said the event was well attended. “And everybody seemed to have fun,” she laughed. While those music and food distractions were fine for the owner’s end of the leash, the canine visitors got to take part in their own fun, including walking events covering 1 mile, 5K and 10K courses. Animal visitors were also offered low cost microchipping for identification, as well as savings for spaying and neutering services.
“And we got to show off the progress on the new building,” Haasaker added.
That new shelter building is nearing completion. Haasaker points out it will be home to an indoor/outdoor facility for dogs on one side and cats on the other, providing exercise and play facilities for Basin and Boulder pets. “We’ve really gotten a lot of help from local contractors on the building,” Haasaker says, “And we’re just getting to the finishing touches.” Most of the electrical and plumbing infrastructure is already in place, and now the focus is on the road and parking area. Bullock Construction is providing the road mix, and Haasaker said Old Geezer Construction and Basin Creek Solutions played major roles in getting the building finished. “We had to go over the hill for the ventilation system,” Haasaker says, “But we really got a lot of help from the local people.”
Haasaker says although fundraising efforts are still underway to purchase kennels and fencing, the Animal Shelter & Care of Jefferson County expects to open the new facility this fall.
