Aiming to discern between crimes and Crime

In any given issue of The Monitor, you most likely will not read about traffic stops for drunk driving or drug-related arrests. You probably won’t see reports on home burglaries or auto thefts, or stories on domestic assault or disturbing the peace. All of these happen in Jefferson County, of course — but The Monitor doesn’t routinely report on crimes or the court proceedings that follow.

A number of readers have asked recently: Why not?

It’s not that we don’t think public safety and justice are important. John Blodgett, our sleepless editor, keeps his fire and police scanner on almost literally all the time. He visits the District Court in Boulder at least weekly to keep up on convictions and sentencings. We’re in regular contact with the Sheriff’s office as well as the Boulder Police Department and most area fire companies.
