After more than 10 years of service with the Boulder Post Office, Postmaster Gay Peterson has retired from her post.
“It’s really a bittersweet moment, and nothing about it has really sunk in yet,” said Peterson on Oct. 31, her final day. “This is a job that really needs your full attention, and I’m looking forward to a bit more down time.”
Peterson is mother to two daughters, and worked as a bartender and homemaker for 15 years before joining the postal service. After six years working in the postal service, she became the postmaster in Basin in 2007, where she also assisted the Clancy, Boulder, and Jefferson City post offices as adjunct staff. She then became postmaster in Boulder in 2014, and has since managed the office.
“Bartending and the post office are actually weirdly similar,” said Peterson. “You help customers get what they need!”
Peterson, a Boulder resident, intends to remain active in the community and is considering new opportunities for volunteer work. She is presently assisting the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s Office as election staff.
“I’m definitely going to rest a minute, don’t get me wrong!” said Peterson. “But I do intend to stay active, and will, eventually, find new ways to get involved.”
