As the eloquent and intelligent young minds of the JHS speech and debate team prepare for the Southern BC Divisional Tournament this Saturday in Manhattan, the team welcomed parents and community members to Jefferson High School Jan. 20 for a “Night to Shine” showcase. Participating students gave impromptu speeches under the direction of the team’s head coach Kayla Feistner, while attendees were treated to dinner.

“With no seniors this year, I have hopes we can grow next year,” said Feistner. “Most of the students this season are competing for the first time, and they have all grown so much since they started. The Southern BC Divisional Tournament preempts the State B/C competition, which will be held in St. Worden Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. JHS is one of 19 schools competing at the Divisional Tournament, with only students finishing within the top eight of their respective events advancing to state. JHS competed in six tournaments this year.
