It’s been a good fall here at Jefferson High School, and I’m happy to report there are many positive developments ahead, especially with our highly anticipated expansion project.

The preparation for the building project is moving forward. By the end of December, the architects will have 90% of the drawings done for the new building and upgrades. Each portion of the project will go out to bid in January. We hope to break ground somewhere around February or March, or when the weather will allow. This is a very exciting chapter for Jefferson High School and our community.

The new Jefferson City parking area is in the process of being built. The district worked with Montana Tunnels Mining in Jefferson City to lease a portion of their property to build the parking area. The area will be large enough for students to park and for the bus to pull into the parking area, pick up students and pull back on the main road. This will be a safe area for both the students and the drivers.  The parking area will be approximately three quarters of a mile from Jefferson City up Corbin Road and will be posted for student parking only.

I want to congratulate all students who participated in fall sports for their incredible seasons. From cross country to volleyball and football, our student athletes represented us well. I’m always impressed with the composure and sportsmanship exhibited by these fine students and athletes. I also want to recognize the cheerleaders for leading our student body in supporting the teams on the court and field. What a pleasure to be part of such a great environment.

With basketball and wrestling starting, please take note of the new scoreboards in both gyms. With the institution of the shot clock rule, the district replaced the old boards with new ones that incorporate the shot clock above the basket. Thank you to the maintenance staff of Dan Sturdevant, Kyle Lyons, and Chris Wilkinson for all their hard work taking the old scoreboards down and installing the new ones. We are lucky to have such exceptional and conscientious folks working with us.

I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and a happy holiday season.

Erik Wilkerson is the superintendent of Jefferson High School.
