Even with last month’s big snow, Jefferson High’s new addition and Career and Technical Education (CTE) expansion are moving forward with visible results. The two-story addition is almost all closed in, allowing interior work to move forward during the winter. The contractors are beginning to frame the interior and we should see siding and brick soon. The project is really beginning to move along, and we can see the general shape of our future school. We are still on track to open in August of 2024.
And that’s just a small portion of what’s going on in our school.
Since Halloween this year fell on Pancake Tuesday, our food service director Cammy Glidewell created pumpkin shaped chocolate-chip pancakes for our students’ breakfast. Luckily, I was able to sample this delicacy. We are very fortunate to have someone who takes such good care of our students and staff. Thanks, Cammy!
In Logan Brower’s physics class, students designed and built bridges out of spaghetti noodles. They have been studying net forces on objects. The goal of their bridges was to maximize the ratio of weight held to weight of the bridge. The winning group (third picture) held just over 10 kilograms. (about 22 pounds). That made for a ratio of 100:1, 100 grams held to one gram of bridge mass.
Eric Gustafson, our instructional coach, will be helping spearhead the building of a hand-made canoe. We are in the process of gathering the materials now, and he will be working with a select group of students who will do all the construction. We hope to have a future story specifically about the canoe build. We are lucky to have a resource like Mr. Gustafson for this project.
Great things are happening at Jefferson High School. I’m so proud of our football and volleyball teams, and I’m looking forward to basketball and wrestling season.
Erik Wilkerson is Jefferson High School’s superintendent.
