Alice “Almarie” Marie Phelan, 73, also called “Ellie” by friends and family, passed away with her family by her side on Sept. 25, 2023.
Born and raised in Boulder, Almarie comes from a long line of ranchers who settled in the area in the 1800s. She was the first of six children born to Wahle and Jo (Carey) Phelan on Feb. 5, 1950. She would be joined by a sister Debbie and four brothers — Wahle, John, Bill, and Dan — and she loved being part of a very large extended family in the area.
Almarie was active on the family ranch, volunteered at the State School with special needs children, played piano at church, attended church and Catholic preparation at St. Catherine’s parish, and entered baked goods and hand-sewn items at the annual Jefferson County Fair. Almarie graduated from Jefferson High School in 1968 and attended school at Montana State University in Bozeman in the nursing program.
