On Thursday, May 25, the JeffCo Food Share board held a public meeting, where members discussed the future of the local food bank in Boulder. Currently the food bank opens its doors every second Thursday of the month from noon to 2 p.m. to provide emergency food relief to all residents of Jefferson County.
According to JeffCo Food Share President Cathy DuBois, the committee plans to end services, effective Dec. 31, 2023.
There are many reasons for this, DuBois said, largely that volunteers are hard to come by.
“People say ‘call me if you need help,’ but we need more than that,” DuBois said. “We need people who are willing to step up and be part of the core, to be a president of the board.”
She also said there’s an average of 12 families using the service, which is down significantly over the last several years. Many local families who qualify use the services in Helena, which is also an option for Jefferson County residents. Ten years ago, she said, around 100 families used the services.
DuBois said the dissolving process will begin in either August or September. The goal, DuBois said, is for the food bank to stay open through the end of the year.
The current food bank is located at Life Church (502 N. Jackson). For more information call (406) 225-3293.
