Jefferson High School welcomed U.S. Army veteran Kevin Williams to its campus on Nov. 11 as part of its annual Veterans Day celebration. Williams delivered a keynote address to students, staff, and community members that touched on the importance of community displays of remembrance and patriotism, as well as his own military service.

“Today we honor all of our veterans who selflessly placed their lives on the line to protect our freedoms,” said Williams. “They left their families, homes, and lives not for recognition, fame, or even the honor we bestow upon them today. They fought to protect this country and maintain our way of life.”

Williams, a Clancy resident and parent to a current JHS senior, served in the U.S Army and Montana Army National Guard for 34 years, as an infantryman, artilleryman, and logistician. He has served in Cuba, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and most recently returned from his second Iraq deployment in February, 2024.

“We must ensure that everyone in this country can feel the benefits of American freedom,” said Williams. “We help do that by volunteering in our communities and by teaching our children what it means to be an American. I’d like to reaffirm that Veterans Day is a day to celebrate veterans, but really it’s a day for all Americans.”

The ceremony included a performance of the national anthem by the Jefferson High wind ensemble, a song from the Choir, and a number of student addresses by National Honor Society leadership.  Also included were a formal flag presentation, a free raffle distributing a number of wooden plaques displaying commemorative, patriotic images built by JHS woodshop students, and the recognition of a number of student essay contest winners. The “Voice of Democracy” essay contest was won by senior Brookie May, who was awarded $150 from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3648.
