Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is investigating the illegal killing on Sept. 14 of a bull elk in Tizer Basin, near Jefferson City. FWP said the elk was killed at night and its antlers removed, with the rest of the animal wasted. The elk was killed using a firearm during archery season, it said.

Tizer Basin is in hunting district 380, which is managed by FWP for older bulls and branch- antlered bulls. The hunting district can be hunted by permit only — and that permit, according to FWP, is one of the hardest to draw in the state.

Bill Dawson, FWP’s game warden sergeant for the region, said the agency has received several reports from the public on the crime. Those with information can report at tipmont.mt.gov.
