Felt Electric, a new clothing and music equipment shop, opened on Main Street in Boulder June 29. The shop, owned and operated by husband and wife Jeff Guay and Keha McIlwaine, offers a wide selection of salvaged and restored vintage clothing, music tapes, records, and analog music equipment.

“As a teenager, I spent a lifetime in vintage stores,” said McIlwaine. “We just wanted there to be one more place in Boulder for kids, and everyone, to explore.” Guay and McIlwaine moved to Boulder from Utah six years ago. McIlwaine, who is an experienced florist and operates a subscription-based flower service, will also sell her excess flowers and floral arrangements as part of the store’s offering. Guay most recently completed a graduate program in creative writing from the University of Montana, and has a background in education.

“I think we’re ultimately interested in creating a space for art, music, and fashion, but also something of a low stakes spot for people to gather,” said Guay. Guay and McIlwaine intend to make a small space available for group rentals, which they hope will host activities such as club meetings, album listening parties, and private academic talks. The events space, when unbooked, will also act as a public lounge and offer tea and coffee to Felt Electric patrons. Guay and McIlwaine also intend to make a small library of books and magazines available in the lounge. Felt Electric is also offering to purchase used clothing, music, and music equipment from community members.

Felt Electric is open Thu. to Sat. from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m, and by appointment.
