Legal Tender won’t reopen

The Legal Tender in Clancy will not be reopening, according to the local entrepreneurs who had been working for months to restart the business.

“With a heavy heart, we must share some disappointing news,” Clancy residents Phil and Kelli Downer wrote on Facebook. “Despite months of dedication and anticipation, our plans to open The Legal Tender Pub and Bistro in our beloved hometown have hit a snag. The property owners notified us that they’ve opted for a different direction, leaving us unable to move forward with our dream.”

The Downers have been remodeling the restaurant over the past few months, and were hoping to open the business last summer. Efforts were stalled by various issues, including flooding, the need for new kitchen equipment and finding labor to assist. Several teen volunteers from the community assisted the Downers in the remodeling work.

“Our family is steadfast in our commitment to positively impacting this community, and we’re incredibly grateful for the unwavering support and encouragement we’ve received from each of you, from your families (thinking of all the teens who helped us this past summer), as well as your overall willingness to pitch in and help!” the Downers wrote.

When contacted for comment on future plans for the property, co-owner Clifford Meis told The Monitor “We don’t have anything newsworthy to report at this time beyond what Mr. Downer posted.”
