Our annual report: The Monitor expands

Back in June, I was asked to speak about The Monitor at my college reunion. This was great; I welcomed the opportunity to tell my mostly East Coast classmates a bit about the rural West, and to make the case for local news.

I took my fellow alums on a virtual tour of Boulder and Jefferson County (yes, I confirmed, there are real cowboys — and also entrepreneurs, creatives, teachers, health workers and more), and I told them the story of The Monitor’s journey so far, and about what we’re doing to ensure that quality journalism survives here and in other rural places.

And I admitted: There are days when I look out at the world and feel overwhelmed by the challenge that we’ve taken on.
