Hunting bans, fines for Elkhorns elk poachers

Two men involved in a 2023 elk poaching incident in the Elkhorn Mountains pleaded guilty last week and have been banned from hunting in Montana for several years.

Their illegal harvest on private property in hunting district 380 came to light that September when one of the men, Dylan Boyer, posted on Facebook a photo of himself posing over the trophy-sized bull elk. In August, authorities charged the four men with 33 total offenses.

“We’ve had some success in getting some felony convictions on poaching that’s occurred in the Elkhorns,” Troy Hinck, Fish, Wildlife and Parks game warden for Helena, said at last week’s Elkhorn Working Group meeting.
