An army of hunters stalked into the hills and backcountry of Jefferson County this past weekend for the opening of Montana’s deer and elk gun hunting season.

Jefferson City’s Bret Lian says the first days are always busy, but this year it seemed all of the state’s hunters had emerged at once. “Most I’ve ever seen,” he told The Monitor, yet kept his favored elk spot a secret. “Hunters don’t say where they go.”

Of Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks’ more than 60 different hunting seasons, the granddaddy of them all is the general season for deer and elk. And no area of the state is better known for trophy bulls than the Elkhorn Mountains.
