I have recently been in contact with a lot of folks relating to art, since I am the Art Director for the Heart of Helena Art Show and Auction, April 9 at the Helena Civic Center. Most artists see their work as a means of self-expression, and it’s often fascinating to talk with them about their process, what motivates them, what they hope to achieve, and how their art speaks for them.
It got me to thinking: How often do we get to express ourselves in our normal lives? I personally get to delve into self-expression because I write this column, and thereby put my thought process on paper in the form of creative writing. You might think I’m boring, or you may not agree with me, but for me personally, I have this creative outlet for self-expression.
It’s not surprising in talking to many artists to discover that they really don’t care whether their art sells, or impresses people, or gets judged as worthwhile. They create it because the process is important to them, kind of like the means justifies the end, so to speak.
