City council reviews new zoning code

Boulder’s City Council on Monday reviewed new zoning regulations designed to support the implementation of the city’s new growth policy. 

The new code is organized by a zoning map that divides the city into six separate districts — Residential, Mixed Use, General Commercial, Central Business, Public and Institutional, and Parks Recreation and Open Land — each with its own set of regulations. The current map has four zoning districts. 

Jerry Grebenc, the Great West Engineering senior planner who advised on the new regulations, said the mixed-use areas – which can accommodate residential buildings as well as small, low-traffic businesses and institutions like barber shops, laundromats, or churches – were chosen because they already house some small businesses.
