County to seek rural health funding

Jefferson County hopes to receive a share of Montana’s $233 million in federal rural healthcare funds, as officials seek to learn more about how to apply and which initiatives might be eligible.

The Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), part of House Resolution 1 signed by President Donald Trump in July 2025, includes a five-year, $50 billion fund to help rural healthcare facilities offset reduced Medicaid revenue from cuts in the same legislation.

In late December, the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the first year of awards. Montana’s $233 million is the fourth-largest grant among all 50 states, despite having the 44th-largest population at just over a million residents.
