Unearthing an old work, finding new inspiration

After moving to a new classroom just under a year ago, Drama Teacher Mike Hesford’s class remained in disarray as the spring semester drew towards a close. Scripts lay scattered across a back table among old props, having shaken loose from folders during the move.

Seeking honest, compelling scenes with depth to perform for class, Hesford’s Beginning Drama students started rifling through their teacher’s boxes and old works. Amongst the unearthed scripts, Hesford – thanks to his students’ quest – found a play he’d almost forgotten about.

In the early 2010s, he’d been frustrated by the difficulty of securing music copyrights and the dearth of quality plays for high schoolers when a talented group of student musicians encouraged him to write his own musical. With their help, Hesford wrote his first-ever play.
