With post-season looming, Panthers show finishing kick

That happened quickly! The spring sports schedule is nearly wrapped up, and the post-season is underway. Jefferson High’s golf squads were competing in the divisional tournament in Eureka this Monday and Tuesday; action wasn’t complete by the time The Monitor went to press. The track and field teams will travel to Belgrade on Thursday for the District 5B meet; and after hosting the Panther Open this Saturday, the tennis team will be at Divisionals in Butte next week.

In their final tune-up before the post-season, the track and field squads joined a quad meet in Corvallis last week. The girls won their competition with 47 points, besting Corvallis, Missoula Loyola and Salmon. The boys took second with 60 points, trailing only Class A Corvallis.

The Lady Panthers delivered a strong all-around performance. In the 100 meters, Allie Muffick led the sprint trio with a 3rd-place finish in 13.65 seconds. She was followed by Maddy Averill in 7th place, clocking 14.12, and Erica Shields, who finished 9th at 15.01. In the 200, Parker Layng secured a 4th-place finish with a time of 29.96.

Middle-distance standout Peyton Stearns claimed 1st place at 800 meters with an impressive 2:33.11. Right behind her, Karsyn Dolezal earned 2nd with a time of 2:37.99. Stearns continued her winning streak in the 1600, crossing the line first in 5:48.08, with Brinna Barry following in 2nd at 6:11.63.

Josie Oxarart won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.09 seconds. She also placed 2nd in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 51.31. The Lady Panthers’ 4×400 relay team of Parker Layng, Dolezal, Erica Shields, and Stearns captured 1st place in 4:30.65.

In the shot put, Allie Muffick took 2nd place with a throw of 39 feet, 6 inches. She was joined by Brianna Layng (3rd, 29’7”), Oxarart (5th, 27’9”), Katie Maus (6th, 26’11”), and Elodie French (7th, 26’8”).

Joslyn Buckley won the discus with a throw of 116 feet, 2 inches. Maus added to the team’s point total with a 3rd-place toss of 92’8”, while Brianna Layng (7th, 76’) and French (8th, 73’) rounded out the group. In the javelin, Muffick once again led the pack, winning the event with a throw of 108’2”. Buckley followed in 2nd with 101’3”, and Oxarart placed 4th at 97’7”. Shields finished 7th (92’11”), and Genna Strozewski placed 9th (81’8”).

Parker Layng took 5th in the long jump with a leap of 13’5.75”, closely followed by Shields in 6th with 13’3.25”. In the triple jump, Maddy Averill earned 3rd place with a mark of 31’4”, and Shields added a 5th-place finish at 29’6”. 

In the boys’ sprints, Luke Oxarart flew across the finish line in 11.34 seconds to claim 2nd place at 100 meters. Not far behind were teammates Caleb Morris, Mikael Richard, and Cooper Mikesell, finishing 5th, 6th, and 7th, respectively. Mikael Richard won the 200 in 23.46-seconds; Zeke Dove followed in 4th place, while Tyler Dew and Wyatt Mosher secured top-10 finishes of their own. McKennon Boyd ran a strong 54.48 to take 3rd in the 400, closely trailed by Bridger Harris in 4th and Tyler Frydenlund in 5th.

The Panthers swept the sprint relays. In the 4×100, Oxarart, Dove, Richard, and Morris teamed up to win in 44.35 seconds. And the 4×400 relay squad of Oxarart, Marshall Jenson, Colten Thornock, and Boyd—delivered another gold-medal performance, clocking 3:32.52.

In the distance races, Thomas Johnson ran a steady race in the 800 meters to place 6th. The 1600 meters saw Blake Nordlinger and Pierce Ward finish 6th and 7th, respectively, while Calum Dunn gave a strong showing in the 3200, earning 4th place with a time of 11:47.

The boys’ throwing team put in another strong performance. The shot put crew turned in a clean sweep of the top four spots: Oxarart led the group with a throw of 48 feet, 2 inches, followed by Tavin Charlton (2nd), Dylan Stevens (3rd), and Brady Armstrong (4th), each of them launching throws well over 44 feet. Kaynen Martin added to the team’s points with a 5th-place toss, with Jed Williams and Gavin Lundstrom also contributing. 

In the discus ring, Armstrong made a 2nd-place throw of 143’2”, while Charlton (4th), Martin (7th), Frydenlund (9th), Williams (11th) and Will Buresh (18th) rounded out the event. Oxarart landed 2nd place in the javelin with a 164’9” launch; Frydenlund was close behind in 4th, and Morris, John Quigley, and Bridger Harris all made their marks.

Quigley soared 6’2” to place 2nd in the high jump. Colten Thornock and Hunter Stevens both cleared 5’10”, earning 3rd and 4th, with Frydenlund taking 5th and Spencer Bolles 6th. In the long jump, Frydenlund claimed 5th with an 18’1.5” leap, and Jensen followed in 7th. Frydenlund capped his busy day with a 1st-place finish in the triple jump, bounding 37’7”.
