Basin school takes first step toward reopening

The Basin Elementary board has launched a renewed push to reopen the school. Assuming the County Commission approves their petition at its meeting this week, the school plans to work with the state’s main educational body to move toward welcoming students this fall.

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the three-member board unanimously approved motions to reopen the 130-year-old school, to petition the County Commissioners at their Jan. 20 meeting, and to publicly post a teacher job advertisement.

“As of tonight’s meeting, we have two verified student applications,” board president Shannon Phillips informed some 20 attendees, plus fellow board members, the new school clerk and school superintendent Sarah Eyer. “With the resolution on tonight’s agenda, we will begin the process of petitioning to bring the school from non-operational to operational status for the 26-27 school year.”
