“It was a blast—so much fun!” said Bryher Herak, co-chair of the Jefferson County Democrats, after spending an afternoon cleaning up Highway 69 near Boulder with friends last week.

More than three dozen people gathered at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds May 8 to pick up garbage along the highway and share a potluck dinner afterward. Four teams were given safety instructions and outfitted with safety vests and large trash bags before setting out to clean up a two-mile stretch of highway from the fairgrounds almost to Boulder Hot Springs.

The group filled 25 bags, which were picked up by the county roads department the next day.

After the road work, attendees sat down to a potluck dinner. Terry Minow, Chair of Big Sky 55+, explained the non-partisan group’s goal of encouraging older Montanans to support public solutions like Social Security and Medicaid.

“We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful state and we want to keep it that way,” said Herak, envisioning more clean-up events. “That’s not political, that’s just common sense. Everyone, no matter their political leanings, is welcome to join us.”
