Federal cuts hit ‘irreplaceable’ Boulder volunteer

Boulder lost one of its more useful helping hands last week when Southwest Montana Youth Partners learned that Bea Nonnemaker, its Americorps VISTA volunteer, had been let go.

The Trump Administration has sharply reduced funding for the federal government’s main volunteerism agency, Americorps, including a $400 million cut Apr. 25 that eliminated most positions under an anti-poverty program, Volunteers in Service to America, or VISTA.

Nonnemaker learned her position had been terminated last Monday. “I was in shock,” the Pennsylvania native told The Monitor. “I had felt very settled here and really happy. It was all of the sudden just gone very quickly.”
