A kidney, a community and a triumphant return

Todd Patterson is set to compete in Boulder’s annual skijoring competition later this month, back in the saddle again after a kidney transplant nearly four years ago saved his life.

The 73-year-old from Kalispell has been competing in skijoring for nearly a quarter century, riding horses that pull skiers at speeds topping 40 miles per hour.

But in late 2018, his kidneys failed. He was put on dialysis, which often left him feeling worn-out and useless Yet in early 2022, when Boulder hosted its first-ever Skijoring the Big Rock, he decided to compete – against his doctor’s advice.
