County Treasurer: New vehicle fees not as impactful as some might fear

RELATED

While it is true that the Montana legislature changed the law on motor vehicle fees, those changes will not affect as many people as Montanans might think at first, says Jefferson County

Treasurer Terri Kunz.

New $800 annual “luxury fees” on motorhomes only apply to vehicles ten years old or less and with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of over $300,000. That rules out most of the motorhomes on the road and is not likely to apply to the motorhomes most Jefferson County folks own, said Kunz.

The same is true of the new $825 luxury fee on light vehicles, she said. That annual fee

only applies to vehicles ten years old or less and with an MSRP of $150,000 or more. That is not the average car sitting in a Jefferson County garage or driveway, Kunz said.

She also wanted to point out to Jefferson County residents that a new three percent administrative fee starting January 1 goes entirely to state coffers. None of it stays with the county, she said.

One note of caution, however: anyone whose motor vehicle registration expires in 2017 but is not paid until after the first of the year will have to pay the three percent fee.
