Bullock: Current tax bill jeopardizes state budget

While the U.S. House and U.S. Senate have each passed a version of federal tax reform, with support divided along party lines, the legislation must still be revised to come to a consensus that both houses agree on. As the end of the year nears, that work continues, with a final vote expected some time next week. In the meantime, Montana Governor Steve Bullock is weighing in on the proposals.

Bullock, a Democrat, sent a letter Monday to Republican Senator Steve Daines, Democratic Senator Jon Tester, and Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte asking that they use their positions as Montana’s representatives in Washington, D.C. to ensure the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 does not inflict harm on Montana’s budget.

“In its current form, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 pose significant problems for the state of Montana,” wrote Bullock. “The Act disproportionately favors the wealthiest Americans and corporations at the expense of Montana workers and families.”
