Boulder resident Bruce Binkowski had more to remember than most locals when the December 21 death of network sportscaster Dick Enberg made the news.Enberg’s six decade career as a play-by-play announcer concluded with six years at the mic for the San Diego Padres. Binkowski served for many years as the public address announcer for the Padres. The two also crossed paths at other sports events.
In 2006, Binkowski co-hosted the San Diego Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Enberg. Among the honorees that year was Reggie Bush, a graduate of a San Diego area high school who was drafted into the National Football League that year as the number two pick in round one. Over the decade since, the running back played for New Orleans, Miami, Detroit, San Francisco and Buffalo. Binkowski reflected on his encounters with Enberg this week.
“I was very saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dick Enberg. I began listening to his work as a teenager in Southern California when he was the voice of the California Angels baseball team and I followed his career ever since,” said Binkowski.
