Although many folks say it is a good idea to stop and smell the roses, at the Boulder Community Library, it might be more appropriate to stop and smell the herb garden. A year or two ago, area residents Susie and Dave Hartman planted an herb garden at the north side of the sidewalk leading into the library. Visitors pass it all the time, but until recently, few were aware it was there. Just recently, they placed rocks by each of the plants, designating the names of the plants. Not only are the names there in English, but the scientific names are there as well.
Included in the garden are many intriguing and enticing herbs: apple mint, chocolate mint, lemon balm, hyssop, lemon thyme, cat mint and lavendar among others. The Hartmans are well known around the area for their love of plants and gardening. They are active members of the Growing Community Naturally group that supports the Boulder Forest Garden. They are also known for the fragrant soaps they create and sell locally, many using herbal fragrances. Now, thanks to the work of the Hartmans, area children, and adults as well, can learn more at the library. The firsthand exposure offered by the herb garden adds another dimension to the lessons on herbs and their uses that can be found in volumes inside the library.
