Gianforte, Daines react to shooting in capital

A shooting in the Washington, D. C. area June 14 targetting Republican members of Congress prompted calls for civility and words of sympathy from Montana’s delegation. 

Congressman-elect Greg Gianforte, slated to be sworn into the House June 21, said on the day of the shooting, “My heart broke this morning with news of the shooting in Washington D.C. Susan and I are praying for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, members of Congress, their staff, Capitol Police, and first responders. I commend the heroic acts of bravery we saw today from the Capitol Police.” 

Senator Steve Daines called the news “something we never want to hear.” He praised law enforcement officials at the scene and thanked them and colleagues for the work they do to protect the public every day. He also said his thoughts and prayers were with all of the victims.
