Lawmakers head for the hills around Boulder

More than a dozen Republican lawmakers spent part of the final weekend of the legislative session riding the backroads on public land in Jefferson County. Joined by members of the Capital Trail Vehicle Association, the legislators and family members gathered at the county fairgrounds before taking off on a ten-mile route along the Little Boulder and back. They also enjoyed a lunch at the fairgrounds.

House member Kerry White from Bozeman told attendees Jefferson County has some of the premier routes in the state and some of the most welcoming residents in the state. He and CTVA leader Doug Abelin said those who love trail riding are blessed to have the backing of Jefferson County officials who are working on mapping the available trail system.

County Commissioner Leonard Wortman shared with the group news about the county’s efforts to support recreation, including hiring an event coordinator and considering a recreational liaison to work with forest service and BLM representatives. With the closure of the Montana Developmental Center, the county has a unique opportunity to focus on promoting itself and its opportunities, and the recreational opportunities are a key part of that, said Wortman.

Legislators taking part in the trail ride: Reps. Kerry White (R- Bozeman), Steve Gunderson (R-Libby), Lola Sheldon-Galloway (R- Great Falls), Vince Ricci (R-Laurel), Bob Brown (R-Thompson Falls), Tom Burnett (R-Bozeman), Steve Lavin (R-Kalispell), Don Jones (R- Billings), and Wendy McKamey (R-Great Falls); and Sen. Dee Brown (R-Hungry Horse).
