On any given day at this time of the year in Montana, the weather can bring snow, rain or a combination of both. Fortunately, last Friday saw sunshine and crisp spring temperatures for the Bronc Invitational meet in Hamilton, where Jefferson High was among 27 schools from across classes.
The Panthers made a good showing in this early-season event. Among the boys, Luke Oxarart placed 7th in the 100 at 11.61, while Zeke Dove was 18th in 11:95. Oxarart was 4th in the 200 at 23.33, and Dove 22nd at 24.95. In the 400, Bridger Harris finished 23rd in 57.44, and McKenon Boyd was 4th in the 800 at 2:11.83. Marshall Jensen placed 9th in the 1600 in 59.12. Gary Sorenson was 21st in the 300 hurdles, at 50.20. And the boys’ 4×400 relay team of Sorenson, Boyd, Jensen, and Thornock finished 5th in 3:44.08.
In the field events, the Panthers put on a clinic in the shot put: Oxarart was 3rd at 45’ 9”, Kaynen Martin 4th, also at 45’ 9”, Tavin Charlton 5th at 44’10”, Dylan Stevens 7th at 44’, and Brady Armstrong 10th at 42’ 6”. Armstrong was 8th in the discus throw at 129’ 10”, with Jed Williams finished 37th at 87’ 9”. Oxarart took 6th in the javelin throw with 152’ 10”; Jensen threw 124’, and Williams 116’ 9”.
Colten Thornock placed 4th in the high jump with 5’ 6”. Thornock was also 14th in the long jump, at 17’ 10.25”, while Cooper Mikesell jumped 17’ 0.25”. Mikesell finished 11th in the pole vault, clearing 10’.
For the Lady Panthers, McKinleigh Doherty placed 8th in the 100 at 13.31, while Allie Muffick finished 25th in 13.95. Mufflick was also 17th in the 200, in 28.69. Doherty was 3rd in the 400, in 1:02.23. Peyton Stearns took 2nd in the 800, in 2:32.36, with Karsyn Dolezal 12th in 2:43.72. Stearns also was 5th in the 1600, in 5:38.52. And Josie Oxarart finished 10th in the 100 hurdles, in 18.00.
In the field, Joslyn Buckley was 3rd in the discus throw with 105’ 6”; Brianna Layng placed 7th, at 96’ 9”, London Ostby 8th with 91’8”, Katie Marks 15th, 83’3”, and Elodie French, 33rd, 62’9”. In the shot put, Katie Maus placed 8th with 28’ 11” with Layng 13th at 27’ 6”. Buckley won the javelin with a throw of 118’; Layng was 7th at 96’ 9”, and Erica Shields 13th with 85’ 10”. In the high jump, Alondra Rivera and Allison Zawacki both jumped 4’ 6”.
Tennis
The tennis girls also had a beautiful day, with plenty of sun and not much wind, when they hosted Broadwater on Apr. 4.
In singles, the Panthers’ number-one Bailee Silvonen defeated Harper Wolfgam 6-3, 6-0. Teagan Silvonen defeated Violet Collins 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 13-11. Evelyn Hansen lost to Bella McDaniel 2-6, 4-6, while Elizabeth Weninger lost to Hailey Hildreth 3-6, 3-6, then lost to J. Brunette, 1-6. Myle O’Neill defeated Adalyn White, 6-1 and Salgado, 6-4.
In doubles action, Hansen and Teagan Silvonen defeated Kraft and Brunette, 6-1, 6-4. Haily Keourh and Bailee Silvonen defeated O’Dell and Flynn 1-6, 6-3, (10-6). Avery Wade and Cassidy White lost to Warburn and Poe 3-6, and to Huckleberry and Salgado, 2-6.
This week the track and field teams will be at Belgrade on Saturday for the Gallatin Valley Invitational meet. The golf team hosted an invite in Helena on Monday and will play in Townsend on Friday. Tennis is at Missoula Loyola on Friday.
