“Boulder is not a sleepy little town,” Chief of Police Juan Trujillo told the city council January 17. Sharing statistics from the FBI, Trujillo said there were 82 total offenses in 2016, including 33 crimes against persons, 43 against property, and 6 “crimes against society.”
Twenty-seven of the offenses were destruction/damage/vandal- ism of property, a number matching the number of assaults. Thirteen theft offenses and six drug crimes were also included. Based on the total number of offenses per capita, Boulder ranks 27th with a .07 crime percentage.
Other similarly sized communities with a lower crime rate reported in the FBI statistics include Thompson Falls and Plains at .06, Eureka at .04 and West Yellowstone at .03. As a whole Jefferson County’s crime rate is .03.
The crime statistics in the FBI report do not include other calls that take police time, such as animals at large, care for the sick or injured, abandoned vehicle and motorist assistance. The complete report on crime statistics is available through the city hall.
