Icy roads, winter driving keep responders busy

A two-vehicle crash on Highway 69 south of Boulder Monday morning was responded to by Boulder Ambulance, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bull Mountain and Boulder Volunteer Fire Departments.

With roads icy all over the county, that was the only major accident as of about 2 p.m. Monday, but there had been numerous slide offs Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

The crash on Highway 69 was near mile marker 26 and occurred around 8:20 a.m. Initial reports said a passenger vehicle slid into a semi. The sheriff’s office said the semi driver was the one who called in the accident, and injuries were unknown at the time of the report.

Sheriff Craig Doolittle said when he drove to work Monday morning he saw at least four vehicles that had slid off the interstate between Montana City and Jefferson City. Even the school buses were running late due to conditions, he said.

Warm temperatures Sunday followed by a cold front and snow created dangerous conditions.

“It’s slick everywhere,” said the sheriff.

“If you don’t have to go anywhere, stay home,” he advised, “and if you do have to go out, realize that under the snow out there it’s just solid ice.”
