Andersen was one of four people who applied to be appointed as Jefferson County Justice of the Peace following the July 9 resignation of Dean Hildebrand. Fred Phillips, Sonny Silverthorne and Michael Zufelt also applied and were interviewed that day by a panel consisting of Kirsch, McBride, County Commissioner Leonard Wortman, Commission Assistant Helen Auch and Chief Deputy County Attorney Andrew Paul. The panel decided later that day to recommend that the County Commission at its Aug. 20 meeting appoint Andersen — who ran against and lost to Hildebrand, serves as city judge for Boulder and Whitehall and runs a private law practice — as Justice of the Peace. His appointment will last until the next general election is certified on Nov. 13, 2020. Andersen said if appointed he would run for election when the time comes. He also said he would maintain his city judge positions yet wind down his private practice.
