Thanks to a Montana Healthcare Foundation grant, parents of young students from Boulder and Basin will have access to a proven parenting course beginning this fall.
The $11,642 grant will support hiring someone for one year to teach Active Parenting Now, a six-week curriculum that “teaches how to develop courage, responsibility, cooperation, self-esteem and respect in your children as well as explaining positive discipline and communication techniques that help families run more smoothly,” according to a description of the course book by Michael Popkin.
The curriculum is for parents of kids 5 to 12.
Jefferson County Prevention Specialist Barb Reiter and Boulder Elementary School teacher Rochelle Hesford learned of the award on July 22, Reiter said. The two had collaborated on writing the proposal.
As coordinator of the 21st Century Program at Boulder Elementary, Hesford said part of her job is parent engagement and education. She said they want to hire a parent to teach the course because “training a parent to do it will be more acceptable.”
The parent will work about 10 hours a week and hopefully be hired by the end of August, Hesford said.
