A self-governed and moral society needs not a taxing government

Why do some desire to continue to raise taxes? Because they falsely assume that, with enough money, the government can solve our problems.

Some mistakenly feel the government needs to help citizens who appear, or declare, that they are suffering. This bad idea was birthed in 19th century Germany and quickly migrated, along with other bad socialist ideas, to the United States. The first government welfare program in America didn’t appear until 1909 in Kansas City, and from that beachhead it raced to Washington, D.C. and throughout the rest of the country. It’s been a losing battle since then.

I could be convinced to agree that the only tax a man should pay would be that which funds a benefit for him directly. He and his neighbors might submit to a tax for certain roads, for policing, for fire protection. Such things might be funded through taxes. But I am reminded of these words by Walter E. Williams: “No matter how worthy the cause, it is robbery, theft, and injustice to confiscate the property of one person and give it to another to whom it does not belong.”
