Most Republicans continue to give President Trump a blank check regardless of conduct they would have said was inappropriate or even treasonous had a party other than their own been in power. That this President continues to challenge our Constitutional checks and balances means nothing to Republicans as long as their team is at the helm.
Is there even a tipping point to this reality? The President doesn’t think so, as evidenced by his saying he wouldn’t lose voters even if he shot somebody in the street. A more recent abuse of power and dangerous precedent was his stated intent to keep the FBI in the dark regarding information received from foreign governments that would directly affect our election process. Even more worrisome is the beating of war drums with respect to Iran. (Interestingly, the President has surrounded himself with the same folks, John Bolton and company, who got us into the Iraq quagmire.)
The unconditional fervor from Trump followers to support a man whose lifelong goal has been to promote his own brand and satisfy his autocratic ambitions has uncanny similarities to those seen in Germany 75 years ago. Let’s hope we’re wiser! – Zia Kazimi, Clancy
