For the first time in at least 32 years, the City of Boulder has its own judge

The City appointed a judge last week, ending a long-standing informal agreement with Jefferson County to receive city court services through the County’s Justice Court.

Mayor Rusty Giulio, at a special meeting of the City Council on Jan. 17, swore in attorney and former Justice of the Peace candidate Steve Anderson as the City’s judge, a role Anderson also fills for Whitehall.

Anderson’s appointment corrects an error more than three decades long, according to County Attorney Steve Haddon. Dennis Giulio, who retired as the County’s Justice of the Peace in December, had served concurrently since 1987 as City Judge. His court, including its clerks, had acted as Boulder City Court, a relationship Montana statute allows in third-class cities — those with a population greater than 1,000 and less than 5,000.
