Montana movie festival starts March 10 at Boulder library

Boulder Friends of the Library in March is holding its second annual Montana movie festival, featuring three films that have an actor, director, locale or some other connection with Montana.

“The Ballad of Lefty Brown,” “The Astronaut Farmer” and “The Slaughter Rule” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. on March 10, 18 and 26, respectively.

“The Ballad of Lefty Brown” stars part-time Boulder Valley resident Bill Pullman, long-time Montana resident Peter Fonda and more than 100 local hired as extras. It was filmed in Southwestern Montana, including Whitehall and the Boulder Valley.

“The Astronaut Farmer” was directed by Michael Polish and written by him and his brother Mark Polish; both spent time growing up in Montana, as did their father. Michael Polish was married in Phillipsburg.

“The Slaughter Rule” was written and directed by Alex and Andrew Smith, who grew up in the Missoula area. Their mom, Annick Smith, is a writer and film producer who has lived in Montana since 1964, while their stepfather is author William Kittredge, who taught creative writing at the University of Montana for 30 years.
